Additional Information

Laird Engineers is equipped to provide civil engineering services, typically on projects where we also perform structural engineering services.  Whether it is providing complete civil engineering services for a multi-use development, site design for a new site, rerouting existing utilities for the addition of a new building or expanding an existing parking lot, Laird Engineers has the experience required to provide construction documents for your project.

From interacting with the surveyor to coordination with the architect and other engineers and addressing field issues with the contractor, Laird Engineers remains involved throughout the project.  We also have the capability and experience to serve as the prime professional on civil engineering projects.

  • The Township at Highland Colony is a multi-use development in Ridgeland, MS, just outside of Jackson.  Over the last few years, Laird Engineers has designed several structural and civil projects in the development.
  • The first project is a one story retail building located at 1051 Highland Colony Parkway.  The building is constructed of steel framing with a roof constructed of steel bar joists and metal deck.  At each corner, a tower projects above the roof surface as an architectural feature.  The towers and the wall framing supporting the brick are constructed of cold-formed metal studs.
  • The second building is a two-story steel-framed building.  Even though the main frame of the building is steel, the developer requested wood floor framing and roof trusses in order to reduce cost.  In addition, the exterior brick walls are supported by wood stud framing.

  • The new 50,000 square foot dormitory is built on the campus of Belhaven University in Jackson, MS.  With the university enrollment growing, Belhaven University was in need of adding additional capacity for housing on the campus.  The new dormitory, called University Village provides apartment-style housing for 132 students.

  • Laird Engineers provided structural and civil engineering design for the new three-story wood-framed dormitory.  Typical of commercial construction in the Jackson area, the foundation is constructed of a deep-foundation, in this case augercast piles, with a crawl space to allow for movement of the expansive clays in the area.  The deep foundation supports concrete grade beams, which in turn supports steel joists and concrete on metal deck for the first floor.  Above the first floor, wood framed shear walls are used to resist lateral loads.  In addition, the wood framed walls support, wood floor trusses at the second and third floor.  These trusses span from the exterior walls to the interior corridor walls.  At the roof level, wood trusses span to the wood walls and provide the gabled profile of the roof.

  • At the rear of the building, an exterior walkway connects to the courtyard.  The walkway is constructed of steel framing with a concrete floor deck.  Concrete stairs lead from the finished floor elevation down to the courtyard.  Laird Engineers also provided civil engineering services for site planning, grading, drainage and utilities.

  • In the heart of the Belhaven campus, the Dr. Billy Kim International Center provides areas for seminars, gathering and also houses a kitchen for preparation of international food for events.  Laird Engineers provided structural and civil engineering services for this project.  The two-story steel framed building is supported by concrete drilled piers.  The floors and roof are constructed of steel bar joists.

  • Being in the middle of the campus and being constructed on a steeply-graded site provided challenges from both a civil and structural engineering standpoint.  Since the building is built on the side of a hill, a concrete retaining wall was provided on the West side of the building to form the basement level.  Drainage concerns were addressed by not allowing the water to leave the site before being collected.

  • Careful coordination with the Client and the Owner allowed construction of the building in the center of campus to be performed with minimal disruption of daily activities for the students and faculty.
